ABOUT
A blend of Serbian tradition and Danish minimalism.
THE DESIGNER
I grew up in Eastern Serbia, where I first discovered textiles through my mother’s hand craft, watching her and her friends embroider wedding gifts for their daughters, a centuries-old tradition that has since disappeared.
Later, at the National University Of Fine Arts in Bucharest, I learned to weave, design textile, and sew.
My graduation collection drew on Serbian folk costumes-an early sign of my direction. Years later, that inspiration returned and became my fashion label-Milijana Jankovic, and a collection that connects heritage with modern design.
VISION
My creative vision is fuelled by my desire to create an environmentally conscious brand that nurtures tradition and authenticity. The rich symbolism of the pattern, as well as the specific embroidery technique combined with carefully selected new materials, make each piece of the collection unique.
RESPONSABILITY
Each piece I create carries a sense of responsibility to the past, and to the craft. By upcycling vintage embroideries and handwoven fabrics, I give new life to forgotten stories and preserve the spirit of traditional craftsmanship.
Every stitch honors the women who came before me, while transforming what already exists into something meaningful and modern. My work stands against fast fashion, inviting a slower, more conscious way of dressing, one that values beauty, history, and care.
THE FABRICS
In my F/W 2024 collection I am using vintage pieces from Eastern Serbia which date back to the 1960s and 1970s.
Most of them are embroidered with a special technique called Štampujit, embossed embroidery on velvet, which is characteristic for the region.
The sleeves on the jackets are hand embroidered on the wool fabric by my mother, for the purpose of creating a bag, circa 1970s-1980s.
